Nikko Trip – Part 2: Edo Wonder Land
Nikko Trip – Part 2: Edo Wonder Land
After enjoying the serene sights of Nikko, we headed toward Edo Wonderland, located in the Kinugawa Onsen area. As soon as we parked the car, the entrance welcomed us with a nostalgic charm, hinting at the time-travel experience waiting just ahead.
Stepping into the Edo Period
Once inside, it truly felt like we had stepped back into the Edo era. Wearing a kimono while strolling through the beautifully recreated streets gave us a sense of what life must have been like centuries ago. There’s a kimono rental area just a short walk from the entrance, and we saw many children and international visitors eagerly trying on the traditional attire.
A Day of Edo-Style Entertainment
Admission is a bit on the higher side—5,800 yen for adults and 3,000 yen for children—but once inside, many of the shows and activities are free, making it a worthwhile experience for the whole family.
We tried baking our own rice crackers, which turned out to be both fun and tasty.
At the Minamimachi Magistrate’s Office, we watched an amusing and educational play featuring a traditional court scene. It felt like watching a live piece of history.
We even saw a procession of an oiran courtesan, a rare and glamorous sight. Historically, oiran were high-ranking courtesans who only entertained elite samurai, and they were known to turn down clients they didn’t favor. It was fascinating to learn about this lesser-known part of Edo culture.
Action and Adventure
For me, the highlight of the day was the Ninja Theater. The performances were incredible—full of acrobatic stunts, stealthy moves, and exciting action that truly brought the ninja legends to life. After the show, we tried our hand at archery and shuriken throwing, which added a fun, hands-on element to the experience.
Before leaving, we explored the Ninja House. The slanted floors and disorienting angles made it a surreal experience—I couldn’t imagine living in such a space, but it was definitely fun to walk through.
Final Thoughts
Edo Wonderland is more than just a theme park—it’s a cultural journey. From traditional attire and food to historical reenactments and ninja adventures, it offers an immersive experience that lets you enjoy the spirit of the Edo period for a full day. Whether you're traveling with family or exploring on your own, it’s definitely worth a visit.
